History of Bowen

Tom Bowen (1916 - 1982) the pioneer of the Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia in the 1950's by the late Thomas Bowen (1916 -1982). It was popularized by students of Tom in the eighties, and training in this technique became readily available for the first time in the mid-80's.

Tom was described as a natural healer. He stated simply that his work was 'a gift from God' - he had the intuitive ability to accurately assess a person's symptoms of ill-health or pain, and he developed a unique technique to address these.

He was not formally trained in any medical or alternative therapy discipline but had a deep interest in anatomy and was influenced by many well known alternative therapists of his time.

The popularity of Bowen therapy is growing worldwide. Bowen therapy has achieved high status among natural therapies. It has been accepted alongside other modalities that have much longer and established histories, which is indicative of the strength of the technique.
